Single and Multi-Site Storage Virtualization
Once the GSX 3000 is inserted in the data center environment, customers can perform online data migrations, virtualize heterogeneous storage infrastructure, and manage storage resources from a single console. This results in a reduced total cost of ownership (TCO) by providing the flexibility to leverage and allocate heterogeneous and multi-tiered (e.g., tier 1 FC, tier 2 FC, JBOD, SATA) storage resources based on cost, performance, and resiliency requirements. In addition to avoiding vendor lock-in, this provides customers economic benefits in the procurement and management of storage resources by avoiding independent points of administration and costly downtime, while reducing training requirements. The GSX 3000 provides a single point of storage management and the flexibility to partition multiple new virtual volumes from unused storage capacity in order to optimize and consolidate existing resources.
In addition, a GSX 3000 cluster enables modular scalability, with each additional node offering additional resiliency, cache memory, processing, and bandwidth to your multi-tiered storage environment. In some cases a cluster of GSX 3000 nodes can augment lower-cost mid-tier storage devices and provide performance benefits equal to higher-cost tier 1 storage devices. This provides customers with additional flexibility and reduced cost of ownership by removing the requirement to purchase additional tier 1 devices, and realizing performance and usability gains from lower-cost storage devices.
Because the GSX 3000 is also capable of offering a Fully Active storage infrastructure both in a single site and across multiple sites, storage virtualization services can now be extended across long distances. In order to provide a consolidated data access model, storage resources in Site 1 can be exported to hosts residing in Site 2 for data sharing. Should Site 2 have its own dedicated storage resources, customers have the flexibility to pool all or some storage devices across both sites – optimizing and extending storage virtualization benefits beyond the data center. Customers also have the option of adding resiliency to multi-site deployments by implementing Fully Active synchronous and asynchronous mirroring across some or all storage volumes.
