In addition to increasing resiliency across your multi-site data center environment, the GSX 3000 has the capability to connect multiple SAN islands together, extending applications that were designed for use within a site, across multiple sites. YottaYotta can, for example, stretch Clustered File Systems (CFS) from vendors like HP, IBM, and Sun across thousands of miles in order to provide server and storage consolidation, data sharing, load balancing, and reduced time-to-solution.
Clustered File Systems
When used in conjunction with a CFS, a cluster of GSX 3000 nodes compliment the CFS with a Fully Active, globally consistent data image. Each server in a multi-site CFS accesses shared data through a local SCSI exchange with a local GSX 3000 node – as opposed to traversing the WAN. The GSX 3000 then interacts with other nodes in the multi-site GSX 3000 cluster to maintain global data consistency. A single CFS can be stretched across multiple sites and enhanced by the GSX 3000’s geographic cache pool and Fully Active globally coherent storage.

As opposed to traditional disparate islands of operations, when a CFS is extended across distance with the GSX 3000, a single application space can be enabled across multiple centers. This enables organizations to reduce total cost of ownership by extending centralized management across a multi-site infrastructure, while leveraging previously idle server and storage assets. Organizations also have the flexibility to consolidate server and storage assets across sites and/or mirror data across sites for resiliency, performance, multi-site data sharing, and load balancing.

In addition to clustered file systems, the GSX 3000 enables exciting new possibilities for other applications, including VMware Virtual Infrastructure, by extending their virtualized services seamlessly over thousands of miles. Without YottaYotta, VMware products like VMotion, HA, and DRS are typically confined to a single data center. When complemented with YottaYotta’s Fully Active operations, VMware Virtual Infrastructure and VMware Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) can be deployed effectively across geographically distributed centers.
YottaYotta enables VMware to move live Virtual Machines (VMs) via High Priority VMotion across hundreds or even thousands of miles. The migration process is identical to a local VMotion, which can be scheduled and automated. VMware VMotion must transmit active memory and state information from the source ESX Server in site 2 to site 1, while the GSX 3000 implements a Fully Active mirror of the data across both sites. This enables the migration of live virtual machines with zero downtime and zero transaction loss over thousands of miles. Users experience near-local I/O performance before and after the VM migration while WAN traffic is minimized.

Some immediate business benefits of extending VMware across centers includes the ability to perform “follow-the-sun” migration of virtualized services, which can be performed across separate power grids to effectively distribute workload, address peak energy demand issues, and realize energy cost savings. Organizations also have the flexibility to implement planned re-location of virtualized services across centers, including the proactive evacuation of services prior to foreseen events such as brown outs or black outs, or even disaster events like hurricanes.
