YottaYotta overcomes data center challenges by breaking down the physical and logical boundaries of traditional data centers. Much of this is enabled by software cache coherency and the unique ability of the GSX 3000 to maintain Fully Active operations. Fully Active operations provide a globally consistent view of the data both within a site and across sites, with full read/write operations to a single, distributed data image.
The GSX 3000 leverages distributed cache coherence and enforces block-level locking so that all sites perform full input/output (I/O) to coherent shared volumes across multiple sites while still retaining near-local performance. This provides increased flexibility in the management, utilization, and availability of IT resources. In addition to increased resiliency and significantly reduced RTOs and RPOs, this provides for some unique load balancing and distributed processing solutions.
YottaYottas software cache coherency and Fully Active operations can leverage and extend common single-site applications such as clustered file systems, clustered databases, data replication software, and server virtualization across geography, enabling multiple distributed sites to transparently share a globally coherent data image at local SAN I/O rates. In addition to global data sharing, this enables distributed data processing solutions which can provide server and storage consolidation, optimization of distributed IT resources, multi-site load balancing, and reduced time-to-solution.
For example the GSX 3000 can complement VMware Virtual Infrastructure, by extending virtualized services seamlessly over thousands of miles. Without YottaYotta, VMware products like VMotion, HA, and DRS are typically confined to a single data center. When used in conjunction with the GSX 3000, VMware Virtual Infrastructure and VMware Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) can be deployed effectively across geographically distributed processing technologies and centers. In addition to providing follow-the-sun migration of virtual infrastructure, this enables organizations to have the flexibility to implement planned re-location of virtualized services across data centers, including proactive evacuation of services prior to foreseen events such as brownouts, blackouts, or hurricanes.
