Enterprises that wish to use multiple tiers of storage devices (e.g., Fibre Channel, SATA) and systems from different vendors, may be limited in the use and efficiency of their resources. For example, each vendor system may require independent management – with each needing a different set of expertise to run and operate. In addition, vendors may not support functionality like array-based data replication across multi-vendor systems. In fact, in some cases the same vendor may not even support array-based data replication across different models of its own product line, resulting in both inefficiency and potential vendor lock-in.
