By providing a network-based, in-band storage appliance, the GSX 3000 can leverage a heterogeneous storage and server environment, including multi-vendor systems and multiple tiers. This enables enterprise customers with disparate multi-vendor storage systems to reduce complexity and eliminate independent points of administration by providing centralized management across a consolidated pool of network storage appliances and resources.
In addition to extending the benefits of storage virtualization across a heterogeneous storage infrastructure, the GSX 3000 offers the flexibility to move, migrate, and mirror data across a multi-vendor, multi-tiered environment without application downtime. As a network storage appliance, the GSX 3000 has the capability to perform online data migrations and data mirroring without some of the limitations associated with array-based or server-based solutions. For example, array-based replication and migration tools may only function across identical storage arrays while server-based solutions may consume valuable host resources and limit functionality to a set of host platforms. The GSX 3000 provides a scalable, high performance, network storage appliance that provides a more flexible approach than traditional solutions, while avoiding vendor lock-in, the consumption of host CPU resources, and costly downtime.

Once the GSX 3000 is inserted in the data center environment, customers can perform online data migrations, single-site storage virtualization, and manage exported devices from a centralized console. Since the GSX 3000 leverages a Fully Active infrastructure both in a single site and across multiple sites, it can extend the benefits of storage virtualization. The GSX 3000 offers multiple data access models including a globally coherent mirror and consolidated data access. These benefits across geographically distributed sites can provide multi-site geographic storage virtualization.
