Today the Fortune 500, Government agencies, and other multi-site organizations must ensure a successful data migration strategy in order to replace existing equipment, perform storage and server consolidations, allocate more capacity or performance to applications, or to move information across different tiers of storage in order to balance performance and cost requirements. Implementing successful data migrations can provide a significant ROI.
Traditional migration methods such as native operating system utilities are complicated and often disruptive. Applications must typically be shut down for the full duration of the migration, resulting in unwanted downtime and the consumption of LAN resources. Array-based data migration tools require identical storage resources at the source and target destination, prohibiting data mobility across multiple vendor arrays. While server-based solutions often provide support for multiple storage devices, they typically consume valuable host resources, require the installation of specific programs and/or host agents, and limit functionality to a specific set of host platforms.
The GSX 3000s data migration software ensures a successful data migration strategy by providing an automated and simplified approach that supports heterogeneous host and storage environments, while ensuring applications remain on-line during the course of the migration. The GSX 3000 can drive the data migration over high-speed, low latency, 4x InfiniBand (IB) connections (10 Gb/s) as opposed to consuming server, LAN, or existing Fibre Channel SAN resources. In addition, the GSX 3000 offers LUN encapsulation and de-encapsulation, which leverage existing data structures and formats, enabling the GSX 3000 to be seamlessly added or removed from the storage environment.
Since the GSX 3000 provides Fully Active data mirroring, it can provide data migrations both within a site and across sites. For multi-site deployments, depending on network resources, distance between sites, and the amount of data to be migrated, the GSX 3000 can either provide an online data migration similar to the single-site procedure, or provide a local mirror of the source data that is physically transported to the target destination. Once restored at the target destination, the GSX 3000 invokes an incremental rebuild to re-synchronize the source and target destinations by automatically updating volumes at the target site with any incremental changes that occurred at the source site. This provides a simplified, scalable, network-based approach for data center re-locations and storage consolidations across multi-site deployments.
